We are very pleased to announce that Sue Carter, who featured as one of our Guest Milliners and Workshop Leader last year, will be joining us again. We are very honoured to have Sue return, not only as an award winning Yorkshire-based milliner, but also as Sue is the tutor of Sophie and Amanda at Leeds College of Art & Design.
After Sue's showstopping Confectionary Collection which took pride of place in our humble shop during Sheffield Food Festival last year, we can't wait to see what Sue brings us this year. Sue works from the Millinery Studio at Radiant Works in Huddersfield where she creates individual and bespoke hats for all occasions and runs millinery workshops. Sue uses traditional and contemporary millinery techniques to work with all types of textiles. Sue has won Medals of Excellence from the City & Guilds for her work and has been awarded prizes from the Worshipful Company of Feltmakers, Skills Challenge UK, and the Haberdashers’ Guild. She is one of the Making Headway milliners, and her work is currently on display at Hatworks, Hat Museum, Stockport. www.themillinerystudio.com Radiant Works, Back Union Street, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire HD1 6AL [email protected] Hats and hat wearing are inescapably linked to the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland. Be it the classic 1951 Disney version, the beautiful illustrations of John Tenniel in Lewis Carroll's first editions, or even Johnny Depp in the deliciously dark Tim Burton film, we all know the Mad Hatter and his infamous tea party.
So in true bonkers style, we set about planning our own tea party in conjunction with Zooby's, our neighbours at the Winter Garden, as part of Sheffield Food Festival. But we didn't just need some tea and cake. We wanted to create a tea party as memorable for our guests as the iconic versions everyone knows and loves...so we started hunting for helpers again! As we've mentioned before, the Our Helpers page is extensive, it has to be as we were so very lucky to receive so much goodwill and time from these amazing volunteers. The end result, we had tea, cake, sandwiches, flowers, vintage crockery and cutlery, live music and our very own Mad Hatter to host the party. Then we were ready for our wonderful guests, all 25 of them to arrive and enjoy themselves...and we hope from the gallery you'll be able to see just how much fun they had! All photos courtesy of Jo @Binks Photography Hold onto your hats folks, that's right, we are BACK! We will be opening the doors to Sheffield's only city centre hat shop on Monday 16th March and you are cordially invited to join us for our Preview Evening the same day between 5-7pm. This year's shop will again play host to resident milliners Amanda Moon Headwear, Little Denim and Imogen's Imagination as well as two very special Guest Milliners...more details to follow soon! The Hat Stand, Winter Garden Pop-up Shop, Sheffield: Monday 16th to Monday 30th March 2015 Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday 10.30-5.30 and Sunday 10.30-4.30 After being rather quiet over summer, our milliners are back with a splash this Autumn! Amanda, Siobhan and Sophie are all featured in the Business Monthly section of The Sheffield Star this month...as well as a whopping 4 page feature in Profile Magazine. They may have been quiet, but that doesn't mean they haven't been busy and as soon as the next developments are ready to be announced, we will be shouting about them from the rooftops! Again, another massive thank you to our team of helpers, without whom none of these images would be possible, especially our wonderful models Katy, Zoe and Emily

Sophie Cooke- Imogen's Imagination One of the reasons I love Sheffield is the people. The first thing I noticed when I landed as a fresh-faced 18 year old student (away from home for the first time and just a little bit lost!) was how helpful and friendly the folk of Sheffield are. I'm from a small market town where most people know each other, but god forbid you might talk to a stranger on the bus or talk to the person serving you at a till point. Nearly 17 years later and I stand by that first impression. One of the things that has been really important to me is the history of millinery in Sheffield; the memories people have of visiting hat shops and how even just walking past the windows made them feel. I've always had a fascination and interest in social history and this project has really piqued my interest. This hunt lead me to join a couple of Facebook groups to try and find out more. The shops I have been researching were all open in living memory, just well before I was even a twinkle in the eye of Pa Cooke! This search lead me to "meet" Andrea King, a font of knowledge about Hillsborough (where I live now) as well as being a jazz singer and a song writer. Andrea has been immensely helpful with information about the key shops I have been trying to research for which I am hugely grateful. If my belief that the Sheffielders are some of the friendliest people in the world was only strengthened by this interaction with Andrea, she firmly set it in concrete foundations when I received a message today containing this wonderful verse! Thank you so much Andrea, we are really honoured and we simply can't wait to meet you when we throw open the doors at The Hat Stand on 16th May For The Hat Stand/Milliners of Sheffield I have always loved hats, Some people think I am ''Bats" But you know they suit me so well, I can tell Cos' folks chat to me and say That is a lovely hat you are wearing today ''WHERE DID YOU GET THAT HAT''!!!!!
