The Hat Stand originally started as a project with a very simple goal: to bring the first millinery shop, in a generation, to Sheffield City centre.
Within days of opening, we realised that this was only the start of The Hat Stand and that we have lots of ideas for bringing millinery to a wider audience in Sheffield...so watch this space for more developments and announcements! |
We're Free!
Run a women's group? Looking to fill speaker or demonstration slots in Winter/Spring 2017? We are available!
We can offer talks about hats, how to wear them, how to choose them...and even how to make them. For details of our Winter/Spring programme, check out our new downloadable info sheets. Please do get in touch for further information and to our check availability. |

2017: Preparation for the Winter Garden Pop-up Shop - 1st to 29th June
#HATstock: A Celebration of Hat Making in the North, March 2016
We delivered our inaugural 'Journeys into Millinery' talk to an audience of milliners and hat enthusiasts as part of this unique and incredibly prestigious event. You can read all about it in our blog here.
WI on Ecclesall Road: Millinery Techniques Demonstration, April 2017
Our attentive audience got to see some of the tricks of the trade in action and see quite how much work goes into a handcrafted hat. We showed off some basic blocking as well as some easy to achieve at home trimming techniques. We also had cake, it wouldn't be a WI meeting without cake!
The Tapton Ladies: What Hat to Wear Talk, May 2017
We explored some of the "rules" about hats; how to choose them, when and where to wear them and most importantly, how to pick the right one for you. As you can see, lots of fun was had!
Shepley WI and Dore Belles WI: Journeys and Fascinator Making, May 2017
We visited the pretty village of Shepley just outside Hudderfield to share our stories as milliners with the wonderfully welcoming ladies of Shepley WI. This was followed by a feather fascinator workshop with the Sheffield-based Dore Belles WI. Naturally, cake featured quite heavily at both events!

Our Past Events- 2016
Seven Hills WI: Feather Fascinator Workshop, May 2016
More than 70 eager WI'ers, 3 milliners and few chickens worth of feathers...that was certainly a baptism of fire! We and our wonderful students had a super time. However, we learnt the important lesson that we really do need to cap numbers for our future workshops, we may have over extended ourselves slightly with this one!
Preview Evening: The Launch of Hat Stand, June 2016
After the success of last year's launch party, we decided to do it all again! This time, amongst our friends, family and supporters we had a couple of very special guests, The High Sheriff of South Yorkshire Dr Julie MacDonald DL and The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Denise Fox. Naturally, we took advantage of the chance of a photo opportunity.
Meet the Makers: Millenium Gallery, September 2016
We were invited to demonstrate our millinery skills as part of the gallery's Made in Sheffield exhibition. This was made even more special as both Amanda and Sophie have pieces on display as part of the exhibition. If you would like to see us in action, check out our blog.

Our Past Events- 2015
Preview Evening: The Launch of Hat Stand 2015
On Monday 16th March we threw open the doors to The Hat Stand for 2015. All three of our resident milliners along with Sue Carter, one of our guest milliners, were on hand to discuss their work and offer advice regarding any hat related queries...but mostly they helped our guests try on a LOT of hats!
It was a very informal and social evening and you can see more by visting our blog about the evening here.
Wear A Hat Day for Brain Tumour Research- 27th and 28th March 2015
A huge thank you for your amazing generosity this time round. Thanks to your kind donations and by buying the charity badges, you have raised a whopping £175.48 for Brain Tumour Research. If you would like to see more of how we helped raise awareness via the social media campaign, check out #WearAHatDay and #hattastic on Twitter.
We now have more photos of the charity days, thanks to Fiona Oliver Photography, so that's another reason to have a nosy at our Facebook album to see if you can spot yourself.

Our Past Events- 2014
Not content to just have a pop-up shop for two weeks, we decided we wanted to offer more than just a shopping experience.
We were hugely proud to be accepted by Sheffield Food Festival as part of their official programme for our Mad Hatter's Tea Party.
News articles re-capping all our past events are currently being written and will be published as soon as we have been through all the amazing photographs we have been sent.
Fashion Event: With a team of over 30 local businesses, performers and former clients, we put of a hat-spectacular of a show! 10 models were prepped by a team of 7 hair and make-up experts and 12 photoshoots took place around the Winter Garden. In addition to this, we had cabaret entertainment and live music to accompany our hat parade finale!
Mad Hatter's Tea Party: With music and our very own Mad Hatter hosting the tea party we had a beautifully bonkers time! Our tea and cake were provided by our fabulous neighbours Zoobys who made sure everybody was well fed and watered, just like the Queens's roses!
Millinery Taster Session Workshops: A huge thank you to our Guest Milliner Sue Carter for running these workshops for us as part of the Food Festival Weekend. The attendees had a super time and went away with some fabulous Kazashi Flower corsages and super pretty paper gift boxes to keep them in.
Fascinator Workshop, June 2014
In this workshop our attendees learnt how to create curls of sinamay to design and make their own bespoke fascinator to take home at the end of the session.
Minimal sewing skills were required, but they learnt how to use dry heat and steam to manipulate the materials.
We also covered how to cut, curl and create feather mounts to personalise and perfect their sinamay creations.
